Bill Bulaga helped the UW-Platteville baseball team return to its giant-killer status, as the Pioneers knocked off NCAA Division I Western Illinois 2-1 Wednesday in Macomb, Ill.
The Pioneers improved to 5-1 against NCAA Division I or II teams this season, thanks in part to the freshman Bulaga's complete-game pitching performance.
The freshman from Crystal Lake held the Leathernecks to six hits over nine innings. After Western Illinois scored a run in the fifth inning, Bulaga allowed just two hits the rest of the way while improving to 5-3 on the year.
The Pioneers scored their runs in the fourth. Ross Bennett singled and advanced to third on Matt Huckstep's hit. Bennett scored on Nick Pepper's ground out, and Huckstep came home when Jason Watson singled up the middle.
Brandon Ihm had two of the Pioneers' six hits.
The Pioneers (17-18) and Leathernecks (18-29) finish off their two-game series Thursday in Macomb.
