Pioneers earn national rank

UW-Platteville's fast baseball start has earned the Pioneers national attention.

The Pioneers earned honorable mention status in the current American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division III Baseball Poll.

UW-Platteville is 6-4 overall and ranked fourth in the Midwest Region. The eight regional chairs vote on the national poll, and at least two voters must select a team for it to receive honorable mention status.

The College of New Jersey, 13-0, is the top-ranked team in the country. St. Scholastica (13-1) is the Midwest Region's top team, followed by St. Thomas (11-2), Ripon (9-3), UW-Platteville (6-4), Illinois College (9-2) and UW-Whitewater (3-2).

The Pioneers play four games at UW-Stevens Point Saturday and Sunday to open Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. The Pointers, the league's favorites, were ranked sixth in the preseason poll.

The Pioneers' "home" opener is Wednesday, April 5, with a doubleheader vs. UW-La Crosse at 1 p.m. on the University of Dubuque's field.
