UW-Platteville's Ross Bennett earned the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball position player of the week award.
Bennett, a sophomore outfielder from Mequon (Homestead), led UW-Platteville to a 6-3 start on the season, including a 4-1 mark against NCAA Division II clubs, by hitting .429 (15-for-35) with seven extra-base hits, a team-high 14 RBIs and 11 runs scored. He slugged three doubles, two triples and two home runs in the nine games. Bennett hit a two-run home run to help the Pioneers beat DII Pittsburg State (Kan.), who was 13-4 on the year, on March 13.
Bennett is the first Pioneer position player to be honored by the WIAC since the 2002 season.
The Pioneers are scheduled to face Clarke College Sunday at noon in Dyersville, Iowa, weather permitting. The WIAC opener is set for April 1-2 at conference favorite UW-Stevens Point.
UW-Platteville is coming off a 22-21 season, setting a school record for most victories and qualifying for the league playoffs for the first time ever. The Pioneers are picked for fourth in the preseason poll.
