UWP Track and Field June 26, 2008

UW-Platteville's Marcia Taddy earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® women's track & field/cross country college division first team honors. The senior from Two Rivers was one of 15 student-athletes chosen nationwide for this honor.

Taddy is the most decorated athlete in Pioneer history. She has 17 NCAA Division III all-American awards and has won eight national championships, including the 1,500- and 800-meter runs at the 2008 national outdoor championships. With biology and horticulture majors, she carries a 3.71 grade-point average. Taddy's bid for the 2008 Olympic trials ended prematurely because of a foot problem, but she hopes to resume training as soon as she is 100 percent.

To be eligible for the team, the student-athlete must maintain at least a grade-point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) vote for eight all-region teams, and first team members in each region are nominated for all-America honors.

Taddy's honor is the 18th time UW-Platteville student-athletes have earned a first team award and the second in two days. Tony Kilburg earned similar honors on the men's cross country/track and field team Tuesday. Taddy is the first female UWP student-athlete to earn first team honors since softball player Jennifer Zell in 1994 and the first-ever female track and field runner.
