UW-Platteville's Tony Kilburg was one of 15 student-athletes named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® men's track & field/cross country college division first team.
Kilburg, a junior from Bellevue, Iowa, has a 3.89 grade-point average in engineering physics and mathematics. During his junior year, he was a member of the national championship distance medley relay at the 2008 NCAA III indoor nationals and was 10th in the WIAC cross country meet. He helped the Pioneers to third place nationally in track and field and 11th in cross country.
To be eligible for the team, the student-athlete must maintain at least a grade-point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) vote for eight all-region teams, and first team members in each region are nominated for all-America honors.
Kilburg's honor is the 17th time UW-Platteville student-athletes have earned this first team honor. Kilburg is the first Pioneer honoree since football center Chris Lee in 2004 and the first track and field/cross country winner since thrower Bryan Cunningham in 1998.
