Running in one of the biggest meets against some of the biggest competition, the nationally ranked UW-Platteville men's cross country team took sixth out of 29 schools at the UW-La Crosse Jim Drews Invitational Saturday at the Maple Grove Golf Course in West Salem.
The regionally ranked Pioneer women were 12th out of 27 schools at the Tori Neubauer Race, held on the same course. The Wisconsin Badgers won the men's race with 32 points, followed by second-ranked UW-La Crosse, with 49, South Dakota State 92, Run'N'Fun Race Team, 121, North Dakota State 205, and the 10th-ranked Pioneers, 206.
Jason Garvens continued his torrid start to the season, placing eighth with a time of 24.58 to pace UWP. Tony Kilburg was 42nd in 25:57, while Nathan Petesch was 48th in 26:04 while running his first race of the year. Aaron Whalen finished 65th in 26:13, and Greg Alleman was 70th in 26:19. A total of 462 competitors ran the race Saturday.
Alli Tank led the Pioneer women, ranked sixth in the Midwest Region, with a 51st-place finish at a time of 23:15 over 6K. Eileen McGuine was 76th in 23:38, and Molli Springer was 78th, also with 23:38. Lacey Curtis finished 96th in 23:47, while Gina Smith completed the scoring with a 139th in 24:15. UW-Eau Claire won the team title in a race that featured 448 runners.
Some of the Pioneers will run at UW-Madison's new course next Saturday to determine the final spots for the WIAC meet on Oct. 31.
