The Roy Griak Invitational annually is considered a great early test for teams, and UW-Platteville passed the test with flying colors.

The eighth-ranked Pioneers finished second among 35 schools Saturday on the University of Minnesota's Les Bolstad Golf Course.

Second-ranked UW-La Crosse won the meet with 48 points, followed by UWP with 81, Emory 113, UW-Oshkosh 172, and UW-Whitewater 175 in the top five.

The Pioneer women also had a strong showing, taking 10th out of 37 competing teams.

Jason Garvens paced Tom Antczak's men's squad, finishing fourth in 25.45 over 8,000-meters. UW-L's Zach Wilhelmy won the individual title in 25:28.

Patrick Klein (26:15) and Tony Kilburg (26:20) were 12th and 13, respectively, while Matt Hoefs was 25th in 26:48, and Greg Alleman 27th in 26:52 to complete the men's scoring.

The Pioneer women overcame an injury to Ann Tank to take 10th. Tank was in the top 10 for most of the race before withdrawing.

Alli Tank led the Pioneer finishers with 43rd out of 500 entrants. She ran the 6K race in 24:05. Molli Springer established a personal best with a 24.14, placing 53rd. Eileen McGuine was 55th in 24:16, while Gina Smith (24:27, 69th) and Emily Flood (24:50, 92nd) also reached career-best times.
