Both the UW-Platteville cross country teams made impressive starts to their seasons by placing second at the 10-team UW-Whitewater Invitational Saturday.
UW-Eau Claire won both titles on the wet course. The Blugold women had 31 points to UWP's 69, while the UWEC men held off the Pioneers 30-54. UW-Whitewater was third in the men's race with 76, while Carroll was third for the women with 93.
The new-look men were led sophomore Nathan Petesch, who finished second among 160 runners with an even 28 minutes over 8,000 meters, and classmate Patrick Klein, fourth at 28:20. The Pioneers then ran strong together in a pack to secure second place. Junior Matt Hoefs was 15th in 29:11, senior Tony Kilburg 16th in 29:12, Chris Sweeney 17th in 29:12, sophomore Greg Alleman 18th in 29:16, and freshman Shane Lacy 19th in 29:17.
Three Pioneer women placed in the top 14, led by senior Jessica Scott, who placed third in 24:29 over 6,000 meters. Sophomore Ali Tank was sixth in 24:54, and her freshman sister Ann was 14th in 25:48. Senior Trista Baye was 24th at 26:24, follwed by sophomore Gina Smith, 27th at 26:36, junior Lacey Curtis, 28th at 26:40, and senior Emma Dries, 32nd at 26:47.
Coach Tom Antczak's teams will play host to the UW-Platteville Triangular next Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with Dubuque and Knox.
