UW-Platteville's Curt Hanson is a preseason all-American, and the Pioneers are a team to watch in 2009-10, according to The Sporting News College Basketball Preview.
Hanson was listed as an honorable mention all-America by the magazine. The senior from Deerfield, Ill. is a two-time all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first team selection. Last season, he averaged 13.9 points per game and made 40.6 percent of his three-point shot attempts.
The Pioneers were 23-6 last season and finished the year ranked sixth in the final D3hoops.com poll. UW-Platteville earned its first trip to the NCAA III playoffs since its 1999 national championship year. The Pioneers beat Hope (Mich.) 83-59 before falling at third-ranked Wheaton, 74-69 in overtime.
Washington (Mo.) is favored to win its third straight championship, according to the Sporting News. UW-Stevens Point is ranked ninth, while UW-Eau Claire, UW-Oshkosh, UWP, and UW-Whitewater are all mentioned as possible breakthrough teams.
The WIAC is also well represented on the all-America list, as Oshkosh's D.J. Marsh is a second-team pick, and UW-Stout's Jerrel Enerson-Matthews, Whitewater's Dustin Mitchell, and Stevens Point's Matt Moses join Hanson on the honorable mention list.
The Pioneers, under first-year coach Jeff Gard, begin practice Oct. 18.
