UW-Platteville unveiled its much-anticipated, but much-delayed batters' eye in a doubleheader Tuesday. After a one-game delay, the Pioneer batters showed off their stuff, too.
UWP battered six St. Norbert pitchers for 15 hits, including three extra-base shots, in a 13-5 nine-inning game two victory at Kendall Murray Field. The Green Knights won the first, seven-inning contest, 6-3.
Matt Paulus and Lee Hawkins each had three hits in the nightcap and both had RBIs in the three-run first. The Pioneers built a 11-0 lead on 12 hits after four innings. Kevin Osmanski had a double in the fourth inning, and Steve Bomkamp and Wade Axelson each belted triples during the game.
Justin Crotty pitched the first five innings for the win, while Grant Oldenburg, Brandon Byrne, Brent Cashore and Joe Cox followed in relief.
In the opener, the Green Knights scored the first five runs in three innings before the Pioneers rallied. Derrick Rice's long home run to left field keyed a three-run sixth inning. Coach Eric Frese's club loaded the bases in the seventh, but SNC second baseman Jordan Powers made a nice play on Brett Benesh's ball up the middle to end the game.
The Pioneers are now 13-11 overall, and the Green Knights are 13-7. UWP returns to the field tomorrow (Wednesday) at 1 p.m. to face UW-La Crosse in a conference doubleheader.
