Posted March 25, 2009
Playing in the shadows of the Dubuque Greyhound Park and Casino, Loras College rolled seven in the first inning and went on to beat UW-Platteville 14-4 in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday.
The Pioneers held a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Steve Bomkamp doubled, and Shawn Tobie smashed a home run towards the casino in left. In the bottom of the first, however, the Duhawks strung together seven runs on four hits, three Pioneer errors and a walk for their seven runs.
Loras' John Schroeder hit a two-run home run in the second and a solo shot in the fifth.
UWP added two runs in the fourth when Lee Hawkins doubled and eventually scored on a bases-loaded fielder's choice. Brenden Watson came home after the Duhawks threw the ball away on their attempted double play.
Loras improved to 11-5 on the young season, while the Pioneers fell to 5-5.
UWP is scheduled to play at St. Ambrose Friday and then open home and WIAC play Wednesday vs. UW-La Crosse at 1 p.m.
