2009 Heartland Announcement
The Heartland Festival at UW-Platteville has announced the season lineup for shows for the 2009 season. The 2009 season will mark the 9th season for the summer festival.
Opening the season will be a show entitled And The Killer Is… a murder mystery
dinner theater performance. The show is set at the The Bit-players and Extras Academy Targets Movie Excellence Awards; The BEAT ME Awards! The awards are to recognize those actors who must make their mark in a few brief seconds on the screen without the benefit of dialogue...those actors who weren't quite good enough to be given any lines, but they want an award anyway. From the same authors as the 2008 season hit, Wake Me When I’m Dead, the show promises more laughs with the hilarious action of the play taking place between courses of dinner.
“The audience response to Wake Me was amazing,” said John Hassig, Executive Director for the Heartland Festival. “It’s more of an event atmosphere. We sold out nearly every performance so doing another murder mystery event was a definite requirement.”
And The Killer Is… opens on June 12.
Next up for the Festival is the musical You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown. The show, which is based on the ever popular Peanuts comic strip by Charles Schultz, originally premiered in 1967. Heartland will present the updated 1999 revival version where Sally Brown joins Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, Schroeder and Snoopy. New songs have been added to the wonderful numbers of the original version. You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown opens on June 19.
Opening on June 26 will be Forever Plaid. Forever Plaid is one of the most popular and successful musicals in recent memory. This deliciously goofy revue centers on four young, eager male singers killed in a car crash in the 1950s on the way to their first big concert. They somehow are miraculously revived for the posthumous chance to fulfill their dreams and perform the show that never was. The program is filled with great nostalgic pop hits of the '50s songs and delightful patter that keeps audiences rolling in the aisles.
On July 10 the Festival will present the show that won more TONY awards than any show in history – The Producers. The plot of the show is simple: a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history thereby bilking their backers out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show (Springtime for Hitler) is a smash hit! With a truly hysterical book co-written by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan (Annie) and music and lyrics by Mr. Brooks, The Producers skewers Broadway traditions and takes no prisoners as it proudly proclaims itself an “equal opportunity offender!”
“The Producers is a hilarious old-fashioned Broadway Musical in every sense of the word. You leave the theatre humming the tunes and laughing,” said Hassig. “It’s definitely a grown-up show, and very non politically correct. Fans of the Mel Brooks style of comedy will love this show.”
All of these shows will run in a rotating repertory schedule until August 9. Once The Producers is open the shows will run Tuesday through Sunday with two shows on Saturday and two on Sunday. Groups of 10 or more can purchase tickets now by calling 608-342-1398. Single ticket purchases will begin on April 6.
Missoula Children’s Theatre will return once again to the Festival. More details will be announced about the MCT residency at a later date.
The Festival also has one more show planned for young people from around the tri-states.
“We’ve got one more show coming specifically planned for area kids. This one will be an all kid production top to bottom,” said Hassig. The new production is an added event to the Festival schedule in direct response to the strong participation by area kids over the Festival’s eight year history.
“The young people in this area always astound me with the high level of talent. This show will be specifically for them,” he continued. More details will be announced after the first of the year.
Auditions for the productions of The Producers, You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown, and the Killer Is and Forever Plaid will be held March 1 and 2 at the CFA.
