The multiple award-winning Godspell opened Off-Broadway in 1971 and eventually moved to Broadway in June 1976. The musical is a series of parables based upon the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Its storyline is told through the show's subtext--in the way the players, disciples, interact with their leader, Jesus, coming together to create a sense of community. The show also touchingly presents the story of Jesus' last moments beginning with the Last Supper and continuing through the crucifixion. Drawn from a variety of theatrical and musical styles including pantomime, charades, pop/folk rock, gospel and vaudeville, the musical is a contemporary reflection on the life of Jesus focusing on his precepts of kindness, tolerance and love. Featuring a sparkling score by Stephen Schwartz, Godspell boasts a string of recognizable, well-loved songs, including the international hit, "Day By Day," "Prepare Ye The Way Of The Lord," "Learn Your Lessons Well," "All Good Gifts," "Turn Back, O Man" and "By My Side." Now considered a modern classic, Godspell brings the parables of Jesus humanly and hearteningly to life.
