Alcohol and other drug abuse (AODA) is a significant problem in our society and across all college campuses—the University of Wisconsin-Platteville is no exception! Negative consequences associated with excessive substance use not only impacts the student personally, but can impact those closest to them. Personal injury, high-risk sexual behavior, lower academic performance, and sexual assault are specific risks associated with substance abuse.
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville identifies alcohol and other drug education a campus wide priority that needs to take place from registration to graduation. It is our intent to foster a community of informed adults who make thoughtful and responsible decisions regarding lifelong impacts of alcohol and other drug use by developing a proactive and comprehensive campus model that take in to consideration the UW System AODA campus specific goals:
- Engage the greater university community in addressing AODA issues.
- Assist students in making responsible decisions about the use of alcohol and other drugs.
- Establish mechanisms for evaluating program effectiveness.
Focus will be intentional in the areas of education, assessment, and enforcement.
The use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs has been an ongoing matter of significant concern for the people of the state of Wisconsin. The University of Wisconsin System and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville recognize the importance of addressing this issue on its campus and in its community as it is critical for student safety, health, and well-being.
University Counseling Services recognizes the impact that high risk drinking and drug use has on the social, emotional, and educational development of UW-Platteville students. Knowledge provides our students with the ability to make thoughtful and responsible decisions regarding high risk drinking and drug use. Policies and programs aimed at educating and supporting students are crucial to the overall mission of the UW System.
University Counseling Services currently offers the AODA Prevention and Education Program.
