Physical Education to Communications

I started my college career at UWP as a physical education, health promotions major because I wanted to work with kids and had always been involved in sports. I still really enjoy those areas and will use what I learned from the physical education department in my volunteer work, but college life pulled me in another direction and opened my eyes to new career opportunities. My experiences and work with the Student Housing Office opened the door to a career in student affairs and resulted in my recent change of major to communications with an emphasis in public relations. I am excited that I have found another career field that I really love and am appreciative that UWP helped me change my major during my senior year. The transition between majors has been a great experience and I still look forward to graduating next spring.

The Beginning of a Lifetime

After gaining some valuable experience in student housing, starting from my days as a wing representative, to vice president of my resident hall, then as a resident assistant and finally as a senior assistant, I know that student affairs is the career field for me. This past summer, I was encouraged to apply for an ACUHO-I (Association of College and University Housing Officers-International) internship. After a long process, I was accepted as an intern at the Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich. It was an amazing experience both personally and professionally. Not only was I able to experience how a large university operates and how other campus housing departments work, but I was also able to work with some fabulous people and further confirm my desire to pursue a career in student affairs. Without the expertise, leadership, passion and great examples of the professional staff of the UWP housing department, I do not think I would be where I am today.

More Than Just a University

I feel like Platteville is not just the name of the school I attend. Platteville is where I live; it is my home away from home. I really feel like I have become a member of the Platteville community. I have had the opportunity to coach the City of Platteville U-7 soccer team, to get involved at the Community Evangelical Free Church, and to baby-sit for area families. I really love spending time in Platteville. Participating in community service events really connects you to the community outside of the university environment.
