For the longest time, I can remember my cousin coming home for holiday breaks and sharing endless stories about her college experience at UWP. She always talked about the opportunities that Platteville had to offer for people interested in getting involved on campus. This got me very excited about attending college. When my senior year rolled around, UWP was at the top of my “college list.” After a campus tour, I was hooked. I love the size of Platteville and how friendly everyone is. The campus is absolutely beautiful.
The best thing about UWP is all of the amazing professors. Smaller class sizes give them the opportunity to give students individual attention and help on difficult assignments. Most importantly, the professors at UWP are interested in getting to know the students personally. They are very knowledgeable as to what employers are looking for and integrate real world examples into class lectures. Hands-on activities keep me motivated and interested in my field of study. This experience helps make me feel more prepared as I talk with businesses about internship and future job opportunities.
Being involved with the UWP cross country team, during my freshman year, was one of my most memorable UWP experiences. We used to take mini field trips so our coach could find a place that had the most hills in the Platteville area. Running the hills was tough, but the team faced it together. Once we finished, we all felt a great sense of accomplishment. It was amazing to be part of such a committed group of people.
This past summer, I was fortunate enough to go on a one-week trip to Lakeshore, Miss. that was sponsored by Campus Programming and Relations, the UWP chapter of Habitat for Humanity and an anonymous donor through the UWP Foundation. A large group of students went to the area to help deal with the aftermath of the hurricane. Not only was it an honor to attend but it was also a great learning experience. It was not until I was standing in the midst of the devastation that I was truly able to understand the extent of the situation. I had an eye opening experience as to what the people in Mississippi are actually experiencing. I am glad I was able to make a difference by helping those who were devastated by the storm.
