I took general psychology last year and the enthusiasm and knowledge of my professor caused me to become interested in psychology as a major. As a therapist, my professor would bring in examples from his work for the class and relate it to the lectures and course material. This really enhanced my learning experience. One thing my professor taught us was the bystander effect, which is when a question is asked and no one answers until someone else in the class does. I have been noticing the bystander effect in my other classes and it’s great that I can apply the things I have learned in psychology to the rest of my activities. Eventually, I would like to use my psychology degree to work with kids, possibly in a school setting.
This is my first year participating in forensics. The UWP forensics program allows participants to compete in tournaments with other universities and helps members expand their public speaking and literary interpretation abilities. My public speaking professor last year encouraged me to join and I have enjoyed my experience immensely so far. Currently, I am preparing for two events: the duo and dramatic interpretation. I will be acting the duo with another forensics participant and acting alone for the dramatic interpretation. A lot of acting and feeling goes into the dramatic interpretation. My forensics advisor has taught me many things but mostly to be myself during the competition.
This is my second year participating in Black Student Union. BSU is at UWP to provide social and academic support to black and minority students as well as bring diversity awareness to the rest of the university. I serve on the executive board as the historian where it is my job to take pictures of BSU events in addition to keeping in contact with alumni. BSU hosts many events throughout the year including the Soul Food Dinner, Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration and Ebony weekend. We also host speakers and forums for UWP students. Ebony weekend is one of our biggest events and it’s the one I look forward to the most every February. Informative and entertaining conferences, comedians and speakers take place throughout the weekend. With knowledge and support from BSU, I have truly found my inner black self.
