The University of Wisconsin-Platteville is similar to the area that I grew up in. I like the open campus and the friendly people. I didn't like the city schools that were closer to my home, and I liked the idea of textbook rental. At UWP, the class sizes have been small enough so that when I got to my upper courses I knew my professors and they knew me. While at college, I have learned about how excited I am to get out and teach. My experiences have given me a lot of background and I can't wait to use what I have learned here at UWP.
While at UWP I have taken the opportunities to teach in various settings. I traveled south to Mississippi last winter to experience their public schools and culture. This January, I went down to Jamaica to do my Early Childhood Student Teaching. Both of these experiences have given me the opportunities which will broaden my teaching style and can set me apart from other candidates' experiences. I would highly recommend Jamaica for the cultural and teaching experience.
The community has been a great supporter. I have been able to establish a program at the local middle school with one of the teachers and now the program is being carried out with the support of Chris Bowers, the current teacher. The main street area is fun to walk around every once and awhile. Generally, having a coffee drink at Badger Brothers is a good time with friends. Being a tour guide for the university was a great experience for me. I was able to meet a lot of potential students and share my experiences with them, and it was exciting to meet all of the new people and answer their questions.
