BSU: A strong support system

This year, I becamepresident of the Black Student Union. The goal of BSU is to educate and increase the understanding of our UWP community on African-American issues. It also serves as a support system for all African-Americans at UWP. With the help of my advisor, Carl Wesley, and board members I planned and coordinated BSU's biggest event: Ebony Weekend. This experience taught me how to effectively manage stress, time, people and agendas. The Black Student Union’s “Ladies Nights” are a good way to get to know the new freshman and a way for the upper classmen to support them. I am also very proud of the black men's support group that has been established here. It is refreshing to see the growth in all aspects of life of the men and women in BSU. I believe that “the honorary duty of a human being is to love.”

Interacting with prospective students

I love being involved with student recruiting. One of the programs created by the UWP Multicultural Educational Resource Center is Paths to Platteville. I like this program because it gives me the opportunity to interact with prospective students. I like giving them a taste of UWP and assisting them in making a good decision.

Learning outside of the classroom

I learned quite a few things during my internship at the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in Madison. In studying the 1926 Labor Standard, particularly construction, the 1910 General Industry Standard, and the Field Inspection Reference Manual (FIRM), I found a number of things that directly correlated to the classes I had just taken in prior semesters at UWP. I was relieved to discover that the same topics I have studied at UWP were job requirements at OSHA. All of the Compliance Safety and Health Officers (CSHO’s) that I have worked with were very helpful, knowledgeable and kind to me. This experience was the best because, now more than ever, I am confident that I chose the best career for myself.
