When looking at colleges to attend, it was especially important for me to find a campus that provided a supportive and involved environment. I chose to attend UWP because it offered an excellent civil engineering program and a very active theater department. Due to small class sizes, students are able to develop and maintain strong relationships with their professors while being exposed to state of the art technology. Most importantly, at UWP I am able to be an actor and an engineer.
Since coming to UWP, I have been actively involved as a production assistant with TV services. I have had the opportunity to work with a wide variety of technical equipment while filming programs, student activities and sporting events. Working on live TV has given me a lot of real life experience that relates directly to my theater major. My involvement has further strengthened my public speaking and communication skills. I have also learned how to think on my feet. At times, things go much differently than planned and I must learn how to react quick and professionally. Perhaps my most memorable experience has been working at the Badger Camp Christmas Telethon, which annually helps to raise over $60,000 for individuals with developmental disabilities.
As a writer, performer and director, I could not have imagined attending college without being involved in theater. Through Pioneer Players, a student theater organization, I have been involved in five different plays and have gained experience both on and off stage. Through my theatrical experiences, I have learned that theater is so much more than just pretending to be someone else. Acting allows me to experience life from another individual's point of view. I have learned a lot by gaining empathy for others through the characters I have portrayed. The theater professors at UWP are very helpful and push students to achieve their very best performance. Their constructive criticism is wonderful and has helped me grow as an individual and as an actor.
