One of the highlights of UWP is that the university is very safe. I feel comfortable walking around the campus any time of the day and feel secure in the community environment. The university has installed security call boxes around the campus and the sidewalks are well lit. UWP is a small university and the students, staff, faculty and community members help look out for each other.
In December, I will be finishing my second semester as a member of the Segregated University Fee Allocation Commission (SUAFC). SUFAC is responsible for developing the fiscal budget for each academic school year in regards to student fee monies. It has been a great learning experience to work with a multitude of different student organizations. At first the budget process seemed overwhelming, but now I am comfortable with the budgets and have a better understanding of the segregated fee process.
I have been a member of Black Student Union (BSU) for a year and half and have had the opportunity to serve as the public relations representative. BSU has had a huge impact on my life. Not only has the organization taught me more about myself but it has allowed me to help teach others about my history. Every year, BSU hosts events such as Ebony Weekend and Black History Month. As the public relations representative, I have enjoyed testing my creative skills to prepare for the events. I love working with the Black Student Unions at other universities to gain new programming ideas and information. BSU has inspired me to be more active on campus. I have learned that the purpose of attending college is so much more then just attending classes. College is also about being involved and making an impact for others. When I graduate, I hope that I will have left a lasting legacy for students to follow.
Being involved on campus has made me realize how important time management is. I use my daily planner on a regular basis to keep on top of my studies and to ensure that I make it to all of my meetings on time. Managing my time efficiently is important because it makes sure that I have time to relax when I am not studying or attending meetings. If I was not as involved on campus, I do not think I would be as organized as I am today.
