Major: Mechanical Engineering
Year in School: Junior
Hometown: Jakarta, the capitol city of Indonesia
I came to the U.S. two years ago. I attended a community college in Arizona before transferring to UWP last fall. My brother was attending UW-Stevens Point and recommended Platteville because of its engineering program. When I arrived at Platteville, I was not expecting such a small town. At first I was worried that it would be boring at UWP because of the size but I soon realized that the town and the campus were a perfect fit for me. The small class sizes make it easy to communicate with professors and everyone in the community of Platteville is so friendly. I came to the U.S. to have a brighter future and my education at UWP is preparing me for that future.
I was recently appointed secretary of the International Student Club. ISO is an organization that educates and promotes global and international understanding. Many international students at UWP are members of ISO and we create global awareness by teaching and learning about different cultures, organizing International Night and participating in field trips. I have made many friends through ISO and appreciate the different cultures that are represented in the group. Being a part of ISO is a great learning opportunity for the international students involved with the organization.
Even though I got lost several times during orientation, I have now managed to become familiar with the buildings and facilities on campus. I especially enjoy the Karrmann Library because it is a nice, quiet place to study and it is always warm during the cold Wisconsin winters I experienced last year for the first time. I also like the facilities the Pioneer Student Center has to offer and spend a lot of time there as well. It’s not just the facilities that make UWP a unique university, it’s the friendly people that wave to me when I’m walking to class and the welcoming atmosphere I am greeted with each time I step foot on campus.
