Introduction to Gay Studies is an interdisciplinary course covering the history, culture, and politics of gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered persons around the world. The course seeks to theorize, document, uncover, and revise our existing knowledge about samesex attraction and gender identity and also examine a wide range of related historical figures and events. Using the lenses of social science, science and the humanities, the course explores ways in which sexual orientation and gender limit and expand individual experience.

Focuses on three defining moments: the Scramble and partition of Africa, the institutionalization of the colonial project, and the struggles and challenges of independence. Emphasis is on African agency and the African voice. The course will develop a view of Africans as historical actors and participants on the global stage. Students will be expected to critically analyze: African-European relations and interactions; Continuity and ruptures of African cultures during the colonial period; African strategies of resistance, accommodation, and negotiation under colonialism; Emergence of nationalist movements and struggles for independence.
