A survey of Russia's political, social, economic, and cultural development from 1613 until 1917. This course begins with the election of Michael Romanov as Tsar and follows Russia's rise under Peter the Great and Catherine the Great to be a major European power. It then examines the contradiction between Russia's progressive intellectual culture and reactionary political regime and concludes with the collapse of the autocracy amid palace intrigue, world war, and social revolution. The course is concerned equally with the Romanov rulers, Russia's intellectual elite, and the lives of ordinary people.
