The UW-Platteville track and field teams tried to reach qualifying marks for next weekend's WIAC championships while competing at the wind-whipped UW-Oshkosh Invitational Saturday.

Russ Goessl was the big winner for the Pioneers, winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:06.40. He captured the race by more than 10 seconds.

Lindsey Vick was runner-up in the 1,500-meter run in 4:56.67. Placing third were Corey Digman in the shot put at 48-0.25, Dan Meyer in the javelin at 153-8, and Sara Novotny in the 400 hurdles at 1:12.52.

At the 99th Drake Relays in Des Moines Saturday morning, the team of Mitch Spees, Matt Bischoff, Adam Buss and Pat Klein placed ninth out of 22 teams in the 1,600 sprint medley race in a time of 3:27.7.

The WIAC championships are Friday and Saturday at UW-Eau Claire.
